For the love of May, I’m just going to say it, and hope that it won’t jinx us: Summer is almost here. Cue the longer, lingering days; sweet dinners under the stars; and sunshine finally kissing our skin. Bring on the picnics; the travel; the swimming; and that fresh, local, beautiful, and sweet bounty of food that makes it so much easier to love eating veggies.
Around here we’ve only been waiting for it for like, oh, nine months. It’s a celebration. A relief. And a really big deal. So what better way to bring in this season of light and freshness than by combining both into a chilled and refreshing glass, healthy-cocktail style? Because who says you can’t get the best of both worlds? I won’t even tell if you secretly count it as “getting your greens in.” Friends, I bring you The Garden Goddess.
Just as easy breezy as she sounds, this little almost-summer bevvie will make your soul feel like the best season is here, no matter the actual weather. My advice? Feel free to use whatever fresh herbs you pick up from the farmers market, pluck from your own yard, or have left over from the beginning of salad season. Cheers, sweet friends — we made it!
The Garden Goddess
6 ounces good-quality vodka or gin
4 ounces Lillet
1 lemon, juiced
6 fronds dill, removed from stem, plus extra for garnish
8 leaves basil, plus extra for garnish
Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish each with 1 large cocktail ice cube and a basil leaf. If you don’t want to add Lillet, swap it out with a splash of natural tonic water or homemade honey simple syrup. Serves four.
