The List: Cody ‘Boom-Boom’ McBroom

Before Cody McBroom fell in love with playing soccer, he was a bit of a chubby kid. Now, he inspires others to get in shape as a fitness and nutrition coach. He works at Vigor Ground Fitness and Performance in Renton and runs his own online coaching service called Boom-Boom Performance. “Being powerful, having certainty, and becoming successful in every other area of your life will come twice as fast if you take control and care of your body first and foremost,” he said. We asked him a few questions about staying healthy, as well as what junk food he can’t resist (psst … he loves pie). Here are his favorite things.

Fitness app
Activity for iPhone/Apple Watch. I’m a minimalist and actually don’t think all these crazy apps are necessary or accurate, to be honest. But with this, I see my daily activity and steps, and that’s enough to keep me moving.

Q&A

How often should people exercise a week?
Five to seven days a week! As little as 15 minutes and as much as 90 minutes. I believe in daily activity, because our bodies are meant to move!

What’s a food item people (tend to) think is healthy but is actually bad for you?
Protein bars. Everything is relative here, because if you control calories, you’re going to be fine (typically). But protein bars tend to have a paragraph of ingredients you cannot even pronounce. Not a good sign.

What’s your favorite comfort food/guilty pleasure?
My grandma’s homemade pumpkin pie. I can — and have — eaten an entire pie by myself.

What song is at the top of your workout playlist right now?
400 Bars” by The Game.

What’s a snack you recommend before workouts?
Stonyfield Organic Greek Yogurt, ¼ cup of blueberries, and ¼ cup oats. It’s quick, easy, and hits the exact nutrients needed.

What else do you like to do?
Wine tasting! At home or at a winery, I’m a wino and love chillin’ back and sipping on a great glass of wine while having great conversations.
