Eat and Drink this Weekend

SWFELooking for an tasty local food and wine event this weekend? Don’t miss the Seattle Wine and Food Experience this Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. The premier culinary and wine showcase includes bites from local restaurants, including Eastside favorites like Cafe Juanita; bin on the lake; Volterra; Chinoise Sushi Bar & Asian Grill and The Hollywood Tavern.

The featured Washington AVA is Woodinville Wine Country, and wineries like Sparkman Cellars, Lauren Ashton Cellars, Patterson Cellars, plus wineries from Washington, Idaho and California will be on hand with plenty of sips to taste and bottles to sell.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the SWFE announced its first ever wine awards. More than 60 wineries submitted more than 150 wines for the awards. Wines were awarded Olympic-style medals (gold, silver and bronze, in case you didn’t know how that works), and four wines were awarded top honors:

Best in Show: Brian Carter Cellars, Opulento 2011, Yakima Valley
Best Red: Milbrandt Vineyards, Brothers’ Blend 2011, Columbia Valley
Best White: Eye of the Needle, Harvest White NV, Columbia Valley
Best Sparkling: Treveri Cellars, Gewurztraminer Demi-Sec NV, Columbia Valley

Other exhibitors at SWFE include the Washington Beef Commission; allrecipes.com; Idaho Travel; Lynnae’s Gourmet Pickles; the Washington State Potato Commission and many other interesting food and drink related organizations and businesses.

SWFE isn’t just a tasting event — it’s also a worthy cause. The event benefits Les Dames d’Escoffier Seattle, a 501c3 non-profit organization of women leaders in food, beverage and hospitality whose mission is education, advocacy, and philanthropy. Chef Lisa Nakamura, who recently closed the beloved Allium on Orcas restaurant, is a previous scholarship award winner from Les Dames d’Escoffier, and is very active in the organization. Nakamura will be one of the many chefs on hand providing tastes. She will be sampling her “soon to be famous” gnocchi, which you can find at her new restaurant, Gnocchi Bar. The restaurant is currently running popup dinners at Miyabi 45th in Seattle, but Nakamura is expecting to make a decision on a permanent location soon.
