Barnes & Noble Opens in Kirkland

Brick and mortar book stores are coming back. A Barnes & Noble bookstore officially opened in The Village at Totem Lake in Kirkland this week. It’s the first Barnes & Noble store to open in the Seattle area in 14 years. Learn more about the new location here.

Bellevue Students Win First-Place in National ExploraVision Science Challenge

Two students from Bellevue’s Open Window School won the first-place prize for grades 4-6 of the Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Competition, the world’s largest K-12 science competition. The team impressed the judges with their Coagulation Filtration System, a solar-powered water filtration approach that seeks to provide safe drinking water for communities worldwide who are currently without access to it. Teen Author Sahana Vij Pledges Debut Book’s Royalties to End Childhood Hunger

Sahana Vij isn’t just another cookbook author — she’s an activist on the rise. Although she recently graduated high school, she’s already carving out a niche for herself in the food scene with Bake Away, a cookbook debut to be released by Mascot Books on Sept. 14. And, proving that children really are the future, she’s pledged to donate 100 percent of the royalties to No Kid Hungry, a national campaign committed to ending childhood hunger in the United States. Zenoti Foundation Provides Salon Services to Seattle Shelters

On May 24, the Zenoti Foundation launched its national Shelter Days series with its first event in Federal Way in collaboration with the Gene Juarez Academy and the Jubilee Women’s Center. At Monday’s event, more than 20 shelter residents and staff had the opportunity to select from a customized menu of Gene Juarez Academy’s most popular haircuts and nail services. Services were performed by Gene Juarez Academy cosmetology students under the supervision of their licensed educators. The next event will be on June 14 in collaboration with Snip-Its and The Sophia Way, Helen’s Place shelter. More here.
