It’s Blueberry Season, Folks

Whether you like ‘em baked into a gooey pie or straight from the carton, blueberries scream, “It’s summer!” And we couldn’t be happier about it. At the end of June, Eastern Washington blueberry growers will begin harvesting, and by mid-July, Western Washington blueberries will be ripe for the picking.

This year, 20,000 acres of blueberries were planted statewide, with 60 percent in Western Washington, according to the Washington Blueberry Commission. Organic is also dominating our local harvest, with 85 percent of the fresh blueberry harvest being organic, making Washington the largest grower of organic blueberries in the world, the commission noted.

Where to Pick ‘Em

As you join the quest for the ripest, sweetest blueberries, keep this in mind: “Choose berries that are deep blue with no discoloration, and have a sweet, fruity scent,” according to the commission.
