Make Mine a Mocktail

The new year is often a time to set new goals, and maybe this year you choose to swear off alcohol — or just take a break from it after one too many hot buttered rums during the holidays. Well, National Mocktail Week (Jan. 12-18) is right around the corner, and is the perfect excuse to mix things up.
Cheers!

Pomegranate Sour

Ingredients:

Ginger (muddled)

½ ounce lemon juice

½ ounce lime juice

½ ounce simple syrup

2 ounces pomegranate juice

Egg white

Pomegranate seeds

Method:

Dry shake the ingredients (that means no ice). Then add ice, and strain twice. Serve in a pretty coupe or martini glass, and pop the pomegranate seeds on top for a pretty garnish. (To turn this into a cocktail, add whiskey.)

Ferry Sunrise

Ingredients:

4 ounces orange Dry Soda

2 ounces cranberry juice

1/2 ounce vanilla simple syrup

Method:

Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin. Swirl for 10 to 15 seconds so the drink has a chance to chill and the flavors combine. Serve over ice, or strain and serve in a martini glass with orange zest as garnish.

Harvest Moon

Ingredients:

4 blackberries, muddled

2 ounces grapefruit juice

Grapefruit slice

1/2 ounce simple syrup

Club soda

Method:

Muddle blackberries in glass. Add ice, simple syrup, and grapefruit juice to the berries, and top with club soda. Use grapefruit to garnish the glass.

Spiced Apple

Ingredients:

11/2 ounces spicy ginger syrup

1 ounce lemon juice

1/2 ounce raw honey

Sparkling cider

Garnish with star anise and apple wheels

Method:

Combine spicy ginger syrup, lemon juice, and honey in glass. Top with sparkling cider. Garnish with star anise and apple wheel.
