The autumn air grows chill as a spectral mist rises. It’s the type of night to hunker down and binge scary shows, but what to watch? Submitted for your approval, here are some of the best original shows on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon to give you a shudder.
Stranger Things | Netflix
Stranger Things is the Duffer brothers’ love letter to all the nerdy boys and awkward girls who didn’t quite fit in. It is also a terrifying tale about interdimensional creatures that seek out children for more than Reese’s Pieces. The young actors in the show are all top-notch. Millie Bobby Brown is amazing as Eleven, a mysterious young girl with special powers who has escaped a shadowy facility. Other standouts include Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler and Natalia Dyer as his older sister Nancy, who must put aside their sibling rivalry to stop the aliens invading their small town. Otherworldly events aside, the show brilliantly captures daily life in the ’80s.
Stephen King Universe
Castle Rock | Hulu
Castle Rock is a gothic masterpiece and one of the best series set in Stephen King’s horror multiverse. King and legendary director J.J. Abrams have teamed up to tell a chilling tale set in small-town Maine. Defense attorney Henry Deaver (André Holland) returns home to Castle Rock to help free a mysterious prisoner (Bill Skarsgård) at Shawshank prison. Of course, the prisoner might just be the spawn of Satan. Famed actor Sissy Spacek plays a beautifully tragic figure as Henry’s delusional mom. Not only is the show’s cinematography beautiful and unnerving, but Castle Rock also tackles real-life issues like mass incarceration, small-town decline, and mental illness.
Lore | Amazon Prime Video
Lore explores the legends you never heard about in history class. Based on the hugely popular podcast by Aaron Mahnke, the show shines a light on some of the darkest episodes from the past. You undoubtedly have heard about the Salem Witch Trials, but did you know that there was a vampire panic in New England during the 1800s? How about the tragic case of Bridget Cleary, an independent Irish woman whose jealous husband convinced her village that she had become a fairy changeling? Lore is horrifying because it lays bare the lengths that humans will go out of fear and superstition.
Mindhunter | Netflix
The perfect show for true-crime lovers, Mindhunter is based on the true story of how the FBI’s criminal profiling unit was created. FBI Agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) believes that modern science is the key to solving murders. His partner, Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), prefers old-fashioned detective work to creating profiles. Meanwhile, Doctor Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) must overcome sexist attitudes to help police catch serial killers before they strike again. On the villain’s side, Cameron Britton gives a chilling performance as real-life monster Ed Kemper, who could switch from charming next-door neighbor to brutal murderer in a heartbeat.
