The Heart Ball Goes Virtual

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Annual Heart Ball goes virtual this year as the safety of sponsors, donors, and all involved remains at the forefront due to COVID-19 concerns and mandates.

One of the AHA’s main fundraising programs that campaigns year-round and culminates into two gala events, one in Tacoma and one in Seattle, combines this year into one virtual event for the entire Puget Sound region on June 13.

According to Sarah Floyd, AHA’s senior business development director, “The health and well-being of our community is paramount, and while we cannot gather in person this year, we are really excited to connect with our supporters virtually.”

Using the Zoom platform to engage supporters, the AHA has shown great success with other events going virtual, like their recent signature luncheon, Go Red for Women campaign. “We have amazing sponsors and supporters who know that it’s about supporting the mission, and that this year, that looks differently,” says Floyd.

The one-hour event, beginning at 6 p.m., will feature this year’s honored Survivor Speaker guests, Pete and Brandy Nordstrom, who will share their story of how congenital heart disease has touched their family. Other special guests include the current Golden Heart Honoree, Dr. Gordon Cohen, as well as a special appearance by Chef Ethan Stowell.

A live auction will take place with several items up for bid, as well as other opportunities to give throughout the program. In addition, a silent auction will be live prior to the Heart Ball on Jun 9 at 9 am until Jun 12 at 5 pm. Info will be posted on the Heart Ball website.

Outside of the federal government, the AHA leads the way in funding of cardiovascular and stroke research. They finance grants, lead blood pressure programs, and raise awareness of these and other causes, like congenital heart defects on a regional and global scale.

They are currently involved in several initiatives directly related to COVID-19, including research on how it affects heart patients. “Our mission ‘to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives’ is more relevant than ever during the pandemic,” Floyd said.
